At AU, you are considered a First-Generation student if you are the first person in your family to attend college. We recognize that there are many definitions of First-Generation college students, such as being the first in your family to graduate from a 4-year institution in the U.S. We welcome all First-Generation college students.

The first-generation community at American University is diverse on campus, with about 10% of students identifying as first-generation. We understand that being the first in your family to attend college or graduate school may come with some unique challenges.

To help students in their transition, we are committed to providing the first generation with a one-stop shop with plenty of information to connect students with campus resources, opportunities to meet other first-gen peers and expand their social network and mentorship opportunities to support your overall academic, personal, and professional growth.
